Turkey is experiencing days of shock after the brutal murder of Sıla Şentürk, a 16-year-old girl who was stabbed to death by Hüseyin Can Göçek, a 21-year-old to whom the teenager had been promised in marriage by her parents, against her will. Göçek, with a long criminal record, had been arrested last year and charged with kidnapping and sexual abuse after abducting Sıla, but was released at the end of the year after the girl’s parents withdrew their complaint. On Wednesday, Gökçek knocked on the door of the house where Sıla lived, and after an argument he cut her throat, and she bled to death. The crime has once again brought to light not only the problem of femicides, but also of forced marriages with minors in Turkey.
