Thousands of women took to the streets of Istanbul in places like Beşiktaş and Kadıköy to protest gender-based violence in the wake of the brutal murder of Pınar Gültekin, a young university student killed by her ex-boyfriend, who later burned her body. Similar protests occurred in other cities such as Ankara, İzmir or Antalya. The 27-year-old was buried after a funeral in her native Bitlis province, amid large her family’s pain.
