Hundreds of people gathered this week outside the Iranian consulate in Istanbul in solidarity with the protests that have spread across Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman beaten to death in police custody for not covering her hair, according to the moralistic laws of the Iranian regime. Iranian women exiled in Turkey (it´s estimated that 120,000 Iranians live in the country) also participated in the protest in Istanbul; one of them cut her hair, thus repeating the protest gesture of another woman in Iran. “I could not live in Iran, neither as a woman nor as an athlete,” said another Iranian woman who participated in the protests, and that was forced to seek refuge in Turkey because she could not practice sports in her country.
