The Turkish Super Cup match scheduled to be played last December in Riyadh, which was called off when the players refused to play after Saudi authorities banned several Turkish symbols and the image of Atatürk sparking a great controversy in Turkey, will finally not be played in Saudi Arabia but will be moved to the Turkish city of Şanlıurfa in southeastern Anatolia, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced late yesterday.
The long-awaited Super Cup final had been scheduled for 29 December at the Al-Awwal stadium in the Saudi Arabian capital, but the Arab country’s authorities imposed a series of restrictions that both clubs and the TFF itself considered unacceptable, including a ban on showing images of Atatürk, on displaying Turkey’s national motto “Peace at home, peace in the world”, or on the Turkish national anthem being played in the stadium. Finally, the TFF has decided that the match – which pits the Super League and Turkish Cup champions against each other – will be played on 7 April at 21:00 Turkish time at Şanlıurfa‘s 11 April Stadium.
