Galatasaray was mathematically proclaimed league champion of the 2022-2023 season in Turkey yesterday after winning 1-4 in the Turkish capital, Ankara, thus achieving its 23rd Super League title. Two goals in the first half by Argentine Mauro Icardi, key in this game as in this entire season for Galatasaray, left the score at 1-2 after Milson equalized for Ankaragücü in the 16th minute of play. In the second half, Barış Yılmaz with a solitary break in minute 73, and the Portuguese Sérgio Oliveira 5 minutes later with a spectacular header after a corner kick, sealed the result.
With this victory, Galatasaray was proclaimed league champion – something it had not achieved since 2019 – with still two games to go until the end of the season, and after having added 82 points in 34 games, being 5 points ahead of Fenerbahçe and 8 of Beşiktaş.
