Galatasaray won clearly the derby, consolidating their lead in the league and moving away from its main rival Fenerbahçe.
Galatasaray achieved a clear victory yesterday in the derby played against its great historical rival and in the league, Fenerbahçe, allowing the Lions to stay for the fourth game as leaders of the Turkish league, in addition to extending its advantage over its main pursuer.
The match played yesterday at the Ülker Stadyum in Istanbul was more than a derby, since it came at a key moment for both teams. Galatasaray needed a win to consolidate its lead in the Süper Lig, while Fenerbahçe, just one point behind, had a chance to take the place from its rival of the European side of Istanbul.
In a match at times even in which the local team dominated possession of the ball, it was nevertheless Galatasaray who ended up creating the greatest scoring chances; the first goal came after 32 minutes with a kick from one end of the Portuguese Sergio Oliveira; previously, the referee Halil Umut Meler had annulled up to two goals against Galatasaray in the 13th and 15th minute for offside.
After the break, the Yellow Canaries increased the pressure trying to equalize the score, but the good performance of the defense and especially Muslera maintained the advantage for Galatasaray. Finally, in the 78th minute, after a quick counterattack started in the midfield, Kerem Aktürkoğlu scored after a pass from the Argentine Mauro Icardi to make it 0-2, slipping it between the legs of the rival goalkeeper, Altay Bayındır.
The Argentine Mauro Icardi, one of the protagonists of the derby
The Argentine, with a great role throughout the derby, would be precisely the author of the third and last goal of the match, already in added time, with a solo move that culminated in a powerful shot that went into the net from the crossbar, before the total helplessness of Bayındır; previously, in the 86 minute Fenerbahçe had been left with one less player due to the expulsion of İrfan Kahveci after a tackle that sanctioned the VAR.
The result of the derby in Istanbul consolidates Galatasaray as the leader of the Super League, while Fenerbahçe remains separated by 4 points from both the top and its immediate rival, Medipol Başakşehir. Beşiktaş, who beat Kasımpaşa at home, move up one place and is now fifth in the table.
