Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan held a meeting yesterday with the former Turkish economy minister, Mehmet Şimşek, so that he could once again form part of his government after the victory in the elections, according to several Turkish media reports. Şimşek, who was economy minister from 2007 to 2009 and finance minister from 2009 to 2015, and then Turkish deputy prime minister and top economic adviser to the government from 2015 to 2018, led Turkey to its greatest years of economic growth and made the country emerge unscathed from the global financial crisis of 2008.
After his electoral triumph, Erdoğan promised to surround himself with a great team of economic experts to combat inflation; however, last March Mehmet Şimşek already said that, although he was willing to offer all the necessary economic advice to the government, “due to my work in international financial institutions, I do not plan to return to active politics.”
