Owners of buildings and houses who raise the rental price exorbitantly could face prison terms, Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ has suggested, adding that hefty fines could also be imposed. “It could be a prison sentence or a criminal sanction, or a fine could be imposed,” Bozdağ said during an interview with NTV yesterday, speaking of the 25% increase limit set by the government on the rent prices. The minister also announced that, through a reform of Article 237 of the Penal Code, the same penal measures could be imposed for unjustified increases in the price of consumer goods.
