Muharrem İnce, one of the four candidates running in the presidential elections to be held in Turkey on May 14, announced by surprise this Thursday during a press appearance that he was withdrawing his candidacy. “I withdraw my candidacy, I do it for my country,” said an angry İnce. “I wanted to create a third way, but we have not succeeded,” he added, insisting that his ideal was to follow Atatürk’s true values, from which he believes his former party, the CHP, has distanced itself.
İnce, who requested the vote for his Homeland Party in the parliamentary elections, said that his decision comes as a consequence of the strong pressure received to withdraw his candidacy, mainly from the opposition: “I have been in politics for 45 years, and I have never seen what I have seen in recent days”, said İnce, who had recently even been accused of appearing in an alleged sex video, which the candidate has denied as fake. İnce, being a CHP candidate at the time, obtained more than 30% of the votes in the 2018 presidential elections; however, the latest polls did not give him more than 2% support as a candidate for the Presidency of Turkey.
