Some 420 women were killed in Turkey in 2024 as a result of gender-based violence, mainly by male partners or family members, according to the Turkish Federation of Women’s Associations (TKDF).
According to recent data published in the Turkish press and provided by the association, 159 of the perpetrators of the murders of women last year were members of their own family; in addition, 101 of the victims were in the process of separating or divorcing their spouses.
‘The fact that 19 of the women were murdered in what are considered to be the safest spaces, our homes, really reveals the seriousness of the problem,’ said the federation’s president, Canan Güllü.
More than 1,000 women have had to change their identity
The Turkish government is in fact implementing extraordinary measures to address the situation, including identity change, which has so far benefited 1,103 women who have been able to change their names, places of residence, social security details or even their children’s schooling records, as a way of completely severe their links with their former lives and potential abusers.
As Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya recently explained, ‘all traces of these women’s lives, including their names, professions and affiliations, have been changed to protect their lives’. However, although the authorities consider this measure as a last resort if all other measures fail, the minister confirmed that in some cases these women even have to undergo a second change of identity because their attackers manage to discover them.
According to the data handled by the TKDF, in 2023 the number of women murdered in Turkey amounted to 438. Recent data published by an official survey of the Turkish Statistical Institute shows that around 56% of women in Turkey claim that they do not feel safe when walking alone at night.
