China on Wednesday reiterated its firm rejection of Trump’s plan for the US to take over the Gaza Strip by sending its Palestinian population to land in Jordan and Egypt, in what Beijing did not hesitate to call a ‘forced displacement’ of Palestinians, insisting that the enclave is and must remain an inalienable part of Palestine.
‘Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people. It is an inalienable part of the territory of Palestine. We oppose the forced displacement of Gazans,’ Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said during a press appearance in Beijing, quoted by several international media and agencies. Guo’s comments came after Donald Trump insisted on pushing ahead with his plan to send the two million Palestinians living in Gaza to other countries and launch a major development project in the Strip, which much of the international community has warned would constitute ‘ethnic cleansing’.
The Chinese foreign ministry spokesman stressed that China ‘firmly supports the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people’ and that it should be the Palestinians who govern Palestine, which he considered fundamental to the post-conflict scenario in Gaza, also urging the international community to act constructively in implementing a ceasefire in the area and in reconstruction and humanitarian aid efforts in the Strip.
China had already expressed a week ago through Guo himself its absolute rejection of Trump’s plans for Gaza, reaffirming its commitment to the two-state solution for Palestine as the only way to achieve a stable and lasting peace in the Middle East: ‘Beijing hopes that the relevant parties will seize the opportunity of the ceasefire… to put the Palestinian issue back on the right track of a political settlement based on the two-state solution’.
