The dense fog that formed early this morning in the Bosphorus Strait, which separates Asia from Europe and divides Istanbul in two, forced the suspension of maritime traffic along the strait as well as several ferry services in the city.
According to Turkish news agencies, the fog that began to form during the night in Istanbul continued throughout the morning to coincide with rush hour traffic both on the road – forcing drivers to slow down due to significantly reduced visibility – and on the strait, where the municipal public maritime transport company Şehir Hatları (City Lines) also announced the cancellation of several ferry services until further notice.
In a statement issued by the Şehir Hatları company, it was reported that ‘due to adverse weather conditions (fog), our services… will not be possible until further notice’. However, by midday all ferry services appeared to have been restored as normal.
In a separate announcement on its official website, the Directorate General of Coastal Safety under the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure announced the suspension of all boat traffic across the Bosphorus in both directions, starting from 3:10 am Turkish time (1:10 am CET).
The weather phenomenon left impressive images, with a dense white blanket covering the entire Bosphorus Strait including the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge (2nd bridge over the Bosphorus), which virtually disappeared under the fog. Istanbul was still trying to recover this morning from the snowfall that paralysed the city yesterday, especially in the northern districts and higher areas of the Turkish metropolis.
