Istanbul leads the world ranking of annual hours lost in traffic jams, ranking ahead of cities such as New York, Chicago, Mexico City and London, according to a ranking compiled by global software firm INRIX that analyses various transport data from 946 urban areas around the world.
According to the 2024 Global Traffic Scorecard report, the Turkish metropolis of 16 million inhabitants ranks No. 1 with 105 hours lost in traffic congestion in 2024, 15% more than in 2023 and 38% more than in 2022. The Bosphorus city beats New York and Chicago, which both rank second and third with 102 hours, closely followed by London (4th with 101 hours) and Mexico City (5th with 97 hours).
Among the nearly 1,000 cities and urban areas analysed in the report, the top ranked cities in the United States include not only New York and Chicago but also Los Angeles, which appears in the Top 10 in 8th place with 88 hours lost in traffic jams in 2024, followed by Boston (12th place with 79 hours) and Philadelphia (13th with 77 hours). On average, US drivers lost 43 hours in traffic jams last year, with Fridays being the days with the most traffic congestion.
Jakarta leads Asia, Cape Town Africa… And Brisbane, Australia
Among the European Union countries, Paris leads in traffic jams, just behind London in 6th place with 97 hours, followed by Dublin (15th with 81 hours), Rome (16th with 71 hours), Brussels (18th with 74 hours), Warsaw (20th with 70 hours) and Milan (24th with 64 hours).
In Spain, Madrid leads the ranking appearing in 109th place worldwide with 40 hours lost in traffic jams last year, 11% more than in 2023; is followed by Barcelona in 115th place with 41 hours, 5% more than last year. Within the Iberian Peninsula, however, it is Lisbon that is the clear leader in terms of traffic jams, ranking 44th with 60 hours (5% more than in 2023).
Among Asian cities, Jakarta leads the way in 7th place with 89 hours, 37% more than in 2023, while Cape Town tops the African rankings in 9th place with 94 hours. Brisbane is the most congested city in Australia, coming in 10th place with 84 hours, up 14% on the previous year.
This is the first time that Istanbul has topped INRIX’s global traffic congestion ranking. Within Turkey, Ankara ranks 2nd and 28th globally with 60 hours (7% more than last year), while Izmir ranks 3rd in the country and 67th globally with 47 hours (2% less than in 2023).
