Turkey strongly condemned on Wednesday the incident in the Palestinian city of Jenin, in the occupied West Bank, in which Israeli soldiers opened fire on a group of diplomats from 26 countries, including several members of the EU and a representative of the Turkish consulate in Jerusalem.
In a very harsh statement issued by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ankara accused Israel of endangering the lives of diplomats in today’s incident, which it described as yet another example of Israel’s constant disregard for international law and the most basic human rights.
‘We condemn in the strongest terms the opening of fire by Israeli soldiers on a group of diplomats, including an official from the Turkish Consulate General in Jerusalem, during their visit to the city of Jenin. This attack, which endangered the lives of diplomats, is yet another demonstration of Israel’s systematic disregard for international law and human rights,’ said the sharply worded statement released by Ankara.
The text stresses that what happened not only poses a direct threat to the safety of diplomats, but also undermines the principle of mutual respect and trust that is one of the basic pillars of international relations, and demands that Israel carry out a transparent investigation ‘without delay’ into the incident, and that those responsible be held accountable. Turkey also calls on the international community to ‘condemn this dangerous act in the strongest possible terms’ and to take concrete measures ‘to bring an end to Israel’s impunity’.
The head of foreign policy of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, has joined Turkey in condemning the incident and demanding that the Netanyahu government investigates the incident that occurred during the diplomatic delegation’s visit to Jenin. The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the EU – which has accused Israel of possible human rights violations in Gaza – warned that the incident, in which ‘Israeli defence forces shot warning shots, but still shots, at a group of diplomats approaching the refugee camp within the visit organized by the Palestinian Authority,’ was ‘a threat on diplomats’ lives’ that is ‘unacceptable.’
