Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has assured that Russia is actively examining the initiative launched by Turkey to start peace negotiations with Ukraine and resume the so-called grain deal.
In an interview with Russian state news agency RIA and reported by Turkish media, Lavrov referred to Ankara’s efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine and in particular the role of Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan himself in bringing about an agreement to end the war.
In this regard, Lavrov stressed that only Turkey had so far achieved the only draft peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, in addition to the grain deal that facilitated Ukrainian grain exports through the so-called Black Sea corridor and prevented a famine in regions such as Africa.
‘These agreements were later rejected or not implemented by Kiev,’ Lavrov said. ‘The Ukrainian side refused to finalise the draft peace deal, and they took advantage of the Black Sea corridor to carry out attacks and provocations against Russian ships and coastal infrastructure,’ he added.
Lavrov also recalled with regard to the grain deal – from which the Kremlin withdrew in early 2023 – that the part of the agreement with Ukraine aimed at facilitating Russian exports of agricultural products and fertilisers, and also their access to international markets, was never implemented. ‘President Vladimir Putin said during his meeting with President Erdoğan on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan that Russia is open to continue negotiations on Black Sea navigation. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed a similar view, and all proposals are now being reviewed,’ the Russian foreign minister said.
