This 29 October Turkey celebrates the first 100 years of the founding of the Turkish Republic, which the hero of the Turkish War of Independence, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, proclaimed in 1923 over the remains of the former Ottoman Empire. Numerous events have been taking place across the country in recent days to commemorate the first centenary of the birth of the Republic, culminating today at the institutional level with Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Atatürk’s mausoleum in Ankara, Anıtkabir.
Here, too, thousands of people came to pay their respects to Atatürk and to watch an air show by the Turkish Armed Forces.
All over Turkey there were parades and public commemorations attended by thousands of people, including parades by the Turkish army and civil society organisations.
In Cappadocia, one of the country’s main tourist destinations, balloon tour companies launched 100 hot air balloons carrying 100 Turkish flags and portraits of Atatürk early this morning to commemorate the centenary of the Republic.
The celebration of the Republic’s centenary was also taken to the skies, where commandos of the Turkish army’s special forces (the so-called “maroon berets”) jumped out of a plane and formed the number “100” in the air.
Many of the celebrations and events for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic took place in Turkey’s most populous city, Istanbul, where the Istanbul Classic Car Association (İKOD) organised a convoy of 100 classic cars that paraded through the streets of Kadıköy, on the Asian side of the Turkish metropolis.
