At least 33 suspects accused of spying for Israel through the Israeli intelligence service Mossad have been arrested by Turkish special forces in a series of raids carried out simultaneously in Istanbul and seven other provinces in Turkey in the last 24 hours, according to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, who said the detainees planned to carry out activities including “reconnaissance operations” as well as “surveillance, attacks and kidnappings” targeting foreigners living in Turkey.
Yerlikaya added that 143,000 euros and 23,000 dollars in the possession of the detainees were seized during the operation, as well as a firearm and a large quantity of ammunition. Thirteen other suspected spies for Israel who were part of the network are still at large. The arrests come just weeks after the head of Israel’s internal secret service (Shin Bet), Ronen Bar, claimed that his organisation was planning to assassinate Hamas members “in Lebanon, in Turkey, in Qatar, everywhere” – plans that Ankara was quick to warn would have “very serious consequences” if carried out.
