Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MİT) has managed to uncover a spy network organized by the Israel’s Mossad on its territory made up of a “ghost” cell of up to 56 members who spied on foreign citizens residing on Turkish soil. According to Turkish media, the network was uncovered following the arrest of 7 people from the cell, which operated through 9 different networks controlled by 9 Mossad agents from Tel Aviv. Back in May, the MİT uncovered another cell made up of a dozen Mossad spies operating from Istanbul.
The 56 members collected information on various foreigners in Turkey by spying on their communications and online movements, although in some cases they also followed and photographed some of their targets. All communications between the operatives in Turkey and the Mossad agents in Israel were made via one-use phone lines under names of fake people supposedly located in Spain, England, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Israel sent some of its spies of Arab origin that operated in Istanbul to Lebanon and Syria, to spy on and mark targets on the ground that were to be attacked later with drones. The Mossad also used Turkish nationals to send spies to Serbia, Dubai and Thailand, where Turkish citizens can enter without a visa. The Israeli Mossad also had to develop complex systems and methods to evade the Turkish intelligence services, which in recent years have uncovered other spy networks operating for the Russian and Iranian secret services.
