Turkish deputy governor dies after being shot in his car

The Turkish deputy governor of Afyonkarahisar, a well-known province in western Turkey, died in hospital after being found in his car in the car park of a local hotel with a gunshot wound to the head. Despite receiving emergency medical treatment, his life could not be saved and he ultimately died due to the severity of his condition, according to reports from the Turkish authorities on 8 October.

İhsan Ayrancı, aged 46, who, as well as being an assistant to the governor, also held the post of secretary-general of the Special Provincial Administration, was found mortally wounded inside his car in the car park of a spa hotel at around 9 pm on 8 October, according to reports in the Turkish media. After the emergency services were alerted, medical and security teams attended the scene, administered first aid and cordoned off the area.

After receiving initial medical attention at the scene, Ayrancı was taken by ambulance to Afyonkarahisar University of Health Sciences Hospital, where he was admitted but eventually died as a result of the severity of his injuries, despite doctors’ attempts to save his life.

Cause of death revealed

The Governor’s Office of Afyonkarahisar issued a statement following his death confirming the news: “Our deputy governor and secretary-general of the Special Provincial Administration, Ihsan Ayrancı, passed away this afternoon,” the institution stated in an official note. “We express our condolences on the loss of our late deputy governor, Mr Ihsan Ayrancı, as well as to his colleagues and loved ones, especially his dear family and those close to him,” the statement added.

The governor also confirmed the launch of an administrative inquiry and a thorough investigation by the public prosecutor’s office to clarify what happened. The Turkish authorities initially investigated all the circumstances surrounding the death, including the possibility of a murder; however, the Turkish newspaper Sözcü reported on Friday that the leading theory is that the deceased committed suicide with his own service weapon.

İhsan Ayrancı was born on 28 July 1980 in the Suluova district of Amasya province, in northern Turkey, and graduated from the Faculty of Political Science at Istanbul University. Between 2018 and 2021, he served as deputy governor of the eastern province of Erzincan, and subsequently took up his most recent post as deputy governor of the province of Afyonkarahisar on 2 November 2024, a position he held until his tragic death.
