Trabzon’s team, aided by an own goal from Atleti’s Spanish defender Francisco Montero, ends a Beşiktaş’s 9-game streak without losing a game.
Trabzonspor ended the 9-game unbeaten streak on Sunday that had allowed Beşiktaş to position itself as the Turkish league leader for the past 6 weeks; in this way and after their victory by the minimum against Rizespor, Fenerbahçe now occupies the leadership of the Süper Lig.
Beşiktaş, playing at home, was also the one who scored the first goal of the match played on Sunday night at Vodafone Park in Istanbul, thanks to a wonderful header in the 30th minute in the area by the Cameroon forward Vincent Aboubakar, who scored his 12th goal of the season, easily beating Trabzon goalkeeper Ugurcan Çakır.
The Spanish defender Francisco Montero, who plays on loan to Beşiktaş by Atlético de Madrid, would be the unwanted person responsible for the second goal of the match when, one minute before the break, a shot by Anthony Nwakaeme rebounded off defender Domagoj Vida and was later involuntarily hit by Montero, who could do nothing to prevent the ball from slipping into his own goal.
In the 63rd minute of the game, Brazilian defender Vitor Hugo finished off with a powerful right shoot a ball taken from the corner that had been loose in the area, establishing the 1-2 on the scoreboard. The Black Eagles tried to come back for the rest of the game, but Çakır’s good performance and Dorukhan Toköz’s expulsion by a direct red card on 77 for an ugly tackle on Flavio made it very difficult for the team led by Sergen Yalçın.
A league dominated by the three big clubs in Istanbul
After the match, Trabzonspor coach Abdullah Avcı, who returned to the team in November, had words of praise for his team’s good performance, especially considering that it was his third match in 8 days, including a victory on 23 January in Ankara and another last Thursday in the Super Cup against Başakşehir, last season’s champion and that today signed the incorporation of Aykut Kocaman as a new coach to save a disastrous season.
With this defeat against Trabzonspor, Beşiktaş cedes the Super League lead to Fenerbahçe, who are leading with 45 points, one more than Beşiktaş. Galatasaray, despite winning in Gaziantep, remains 3rd with 42 points while the Black Sea Storm occupies the 4th place, just one point behind the also former leader, Alanyaspor.
