Trabzonspor, goal in League match

Trabzonspor reaffirms itself as leader of the Turkish Super League

Trabzonspor beat Beşiktaş on its visit to Istanbul after a tense match. Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe could only tie.

Trabzonspor reaffirmed itself this weekend as leader of the Turkish Super League after beating Beşiktaş in Istanbul during the last league round, in which both Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe could only draw in their respective games. In this way, and after 12 rounds of Süper Lig, none of the three big clubs in the Turkish league is among the top three places in the table.

After 45 minutes without goals at the Vodafone Park stadium in Istanbul, the Black Sea Storm scored its first goal in added time on a beautiful play, in which Abdulkadir Omur received a magnificent pass from the centre of the field and faced alone Ersin Destanoğlu, who was fooled with a shot at the far post that sent Trabzonspor ahead on the scoreboard, just before half-time.

Already in the second half, the Black Eagles leveled the game in the 62th minute, when Canadian forward Cyle Larin appeared like lightning through the area and, practically alone, received a pass from the wing with which, after skillfully dribbling the Trabzon goalkeeper, established the 1-1 in the scoreboard.

Beşiktaş played at home and so it pressed the rival goal, but Trabzonspor knew how to take better advantage of their arrivals and, in the end, had more luck: when the game seemed sentenced for a draw, 6 minutes of discount passed when after a dangerous play in the area of the Trabzon, in which Beşiktaş players claimed a penalty for a knockdown in the area of Nkoudou, Trabzonspor saved their goal and recovered the ball, starting just at that moment a spectacular counter-attack.

Tense end with fight between Beşiktaş players and Trabzonspor goalkeeper

With many Beşiktaş players still waiting for the referee to signal a penalty, Serkan Asan took the ball out of the box and Abdülkadir Parmak picked it up in the centre; he handed it to the Danish Andreas Cornelius, who was running down the right wing. While two Beşiktaş defenders ran desperately from practically the rival goal, trying to stop the play, Cornelius gave the ball to Nigerian Nwakaeme, who was advancing down the left wing: he left it again to Cornelius, who had already positioned himself in the small area and slipped the ball smoothly between Destanoğlu’s legs.

With the match already over, in the 12th minute of discount, the Trabzonspor goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır would see the second yellow card after a tense confrontation with Josef de Souza due to an alleged push: the tension was rising and in addition to Souza himself, his teammate and compatriot Welinton also saw a yellow card for protesting the referee. Thus, red-hot, ended a meeting with which the Black Sea team consolidated its leadership, and Beşiktaş fell from 4th to 6th place.

Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe could only tie

Meanwhile, Galatasaray could only draw in the match played on Sunday away from home against Karagümrük, from the Istanbul’s district of Fatih; after a goalless first half, the home team took the lead in 69 with a goal from Andrea Bertolacci that made the Atatürk Olympic Stadium vibrate. But the Lions overcame them, and in 88 Mostafa Mohamed tied the game.

In this way, Galatasaray, which last week also drew 1-1 in the Europa League against Lokomotiv Moscow, places fourth in the table exchanging positions with Beşiktaş, and Karagümrük is confirmed as the black beast of the Lions, since Fatih’s club is the only team that Fatih Terim’s Galatasaray have yet to defeat in the league.

For its part, Fenerbahçe, which last Thursday achieved its first victory in the Europa League with a resounding 3-0 against Belgian Royal Antwerp, managed to overcome a 0-2 against at its Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium with a penalty goal from Mesut Özil, already in the added time.

Fenerbahçe, who was last proclaimed champions of the Süper Lig in 2014 and have not achieved a victory in the last four games, remain 7th in the standings with 20 points, tied on points with Beşiktaş and 30 already behind Trabzonspor, leader of the Turkish Super League.
