The Istanbul Governor’s Office has issued a statement denying reports on social media that Turkish authorities have begun banning alcohol consumption. “The obligations set by law regarding the sale and consumption of alcohol are not new. This circular does not constitute a complete ban on alcohol,” the Istanbul governor’s press speaker told to media, insisting that there are no new regulations regarding the sale and consumption of alcohol, but that the relevant authorities are being “reminded” of the obligation to implement the existing law on alcohol consumption.
According to Istanbul Governor Davut Gül, the circular issued on 17 August – which “is not a new concept, but a reminder of responsibilities to the relevant institutions” – reportedly follows complaints from citizens regarding incidents of alcohol consumption in public places such as parks, beaches, picnic areas, or recreational and children’s areas. It underlines that “it has been found that individuals involved in incidents that have led to public disorder and disturbed the tranquillity of citizens, were often under the influence of alcohol“.
Turkish media reported that the Istanbul Governor’s Office, in application of Law 4250, will begin to impose fines of 617 liras (21 euros) on those who violate the ban on alcohol consumption in public places; in the event that a person is intoxicated, they may also be placed in custody until they recover themselves. Stressing that this is not a new alcohol ban, the governor reminded the public that the sale of alcohol is prohibited by law between 10pm and 6am, and that alcoholic beverages should only be sold in authorised premises.
