Turkey could increase the current 81 provinces to 148, if 67 districts that currently have more than 100,000 inhabitants and are more than 30 km from the provincial capital become new provinces, according to Okan Hançer, president of the Turkish Chamber of Cadastral Surveyors (HKMO). Hançer explains that at least 5 districts in Hatay province, 4 in each of Şanlıurfa, İzmir and Manisa provinces, and 3 each in Aydın, Antalya, Istanbul, Kocaeli, Muğla and Tekirdağ provinces, are very likely to become new provinces.
In the case of Antalya, a well-known tourist resort on Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast, districts such as Manavgat or Alanya are likely to become new provinces due to their population, which exceeds 200,000 inhabitants per district. Other districts with a high tourist influx and growing population that could soon become provinces are Fethiye and Bodrum in Muğla, while in Istanbul Büyükçekmece and Tuzla are likely to become new separated provinces.
