A fire that broke out on the roof of a five-story apartment building located on the west side of Istanbul — and which may have been caused by an electrical fault during renovation work in an apartment — quickly spread to three other adjacent buildings, sparking moments of panic among local residents, who recorded the entire incident on their cell phones.
According to the Turkish news agency DHA, the fire broke out on the top floor of a building located at 1250 Street in the Pınar neighborhood, in the European district of Esenyurt, apparently due to an electrical fault during renovation work on the roof; from there, the flames spread rapidly to the roofs of three adjacent buildings.
It was the neighbors in the area themselves who, upon seeing the fire and smoke coming from the upper part of the building, alerted the 112 Emergency Call Center, after which numerous teams of firefighters, medical personnel, and police officers arrived at the scene.
Police officers cordoned off the entire perimeter while the firefighters began extinguishing the fire. During the operation, the students of the nearby Sheikh Shamil elementary school were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Finally, the fire was brought under control, although a total of four buildings were damaged by the flames. Eyewitnesses recorded stunning footage of the fire with their cell phones from nearby buildings.
“All I could do was watch my house burn”
“When I got home from work, the roof was already on fire, completely engulfed in flames. Four roofs burned; I could only watch as my house was on fire —there was nothing else I could do,” explained a resident of Istanbul who lives in one of the buildings affected by the fire.
“In one of the buildings, the attic and the floor below were completely destroyed by fire. Firefighters responded, but the fire also spread to the roof of our building. As far as we know, fortunately no one was injured,” the witness concluded.
