The site of the famous Battle of the Granicus, where Alexander the Great won his first major victory against Persia and paved the way for his campaign to conquer Asia, has been officially designated a historic site by the authorities in Turkey after being located in the district of Biga, in the province of Çanakkale, following a series of scientific investigations and discoveries in archaeology and history.
As a result of the work carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the site of the Battle of the Granicus between the Macedonians and the Persians, located within the boundaries of the Biga district and considered by historians to be the place where Alexander the Great achieved his first major victory over the Persians, has officially been designated a “historic site”: a decision considered an important step not only for the preservation of Turkey’s cultural heritage, but also for passing on to future generations a battlefield that decisively influenced the history of humanity.
“We have secured the site of the Battle of the Granicus, one of the turning points that changed the course of world history. The battlefield of the Granicus, where Alexander the Great achieved his first major victory against the Persians and opened the doors to his campaign in Asia, has been officially designated a ‘historic site’. This unique historical legacy, located in the Biga district of Çanakkale, has been officially protected in light of archaeological findings and scientific research,” stated Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, as quoted by the Turkish news portal TRT Haber.
“I believe this important step, which will add value to Çanakkale’s cultural heritage, will contribute significantly to historical science, cultural tourism, and the strengthening of our cultural routes,” the minister added in a social media post, in which he also shared a current image of the battlefield alongside a diagram of the deployment of the Persian and Macedonian armies on the ground.
A battle that changed the history of Anatolia and the world
The area where the historic clash between Alexander’s army and the Achaemenid Persians took place is located within the boundaries of the town of Karabiga, in the district of Biga, and the exact location of the battle was determined based on archaeological and scientific data obtained through surface surveys and ancient literary sources. Following the analyses conducted, it was determined that the region met the necessary requirements to be declared a historic site.
After granting the site official protected status, authorities are now seeking to integrate the region more effectively into the tourism sector; as a result, new projects are already being prepared to raise the battlefield’s profile within cultural routes and increase its visitor potential. With the planned improvements to the surroundings, the creation of informational areas, and various promotional activities, it is expected that the region will be able to welcome both domestic and international visitors interested in ancient history.
Thanks to its new status as a historic site, the Battlefield of the Granicus now becomes part of the protected areas that make up the cultural heritage of Çanakkale Province, which is also home to other notable sites from antiquity, such as the ruins of ancient Troy. Experts emphasize that this new protected status seeks not only to preserve the past but also to strengthen the region’s cultural identity and foster historical awareness.
Considered Alexander the Great’s first major victory against the Persian Empire, the Battle of the Granicus holds a prominent place in world military history. The outcome of the clash between Persia and the Macedonian armies significantly altered the political map of the time and paved the way for Alexander to quickly take control of much of Anatolia. Historians argue that this site constitutes one of Turkey’s most important military heritage sites, both for the history of Anatolia and for world history.
