At least two firefighters were injured while extinguishing a fire that broke out in a house in the town of Darıca, about 40 kilometres southeast of Istanbul, when one of the burning buildings collapsed during the firefighting efforts.
Turkish news agencies reported that the incident occurred this morning during a firefighting operation when a large fire broke out in a two-storey house on the Eski Hükümet Street in Darıca, a district of the province of Kocaeli. The flames quickly spread to two adjacent houses, prompting the intervention of numerous police, fire and ambulance crews after the emergency services were alerted by neighbours.
It was precisely while the firefighters were working to extinguish the fire that the upper floor of one of the burning buildings collapsed, falling on two of them, who were injured. A third firefighter managed to escape by inches, avoiding being trapped under the structure, which was mainly made of wood.
Both firefighters, identified by the initials M.T. and G.B., were immediately taken to a hospital in the area, where they are reported to be in good condition and their lives are not in danger. Turkish local authorities have launched an investigation into the causes of the fire, which took an hour to extinguish and completely destroyed a total of three houses. The agonising moment when part of one of the houses collapsed onto the firefighters was captured on a mobile phone by an eyewitness.
