More than 100 people suspected of links to the Daesh/ISIS terrorist group have been arrested in Turkey during a major operation carried out in 24 provinces across the country, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said in recent hours.
Quoted by Turkish media, Yerlikaya said the ‘Gürz-41’ and ‘Gürz-42’ operations that began last week were carried out in 24 of Turkey’s 81 provinces, including Istanbul and Ankara as well as in the southeastern city of Diyarbakır. According to the minister, the detainees are accused of active participation in ISIS, fundraising for the terrorist organisation and carrying out terrorist propaganda on social media.
During the operations, police and gendarmerie also seized numerous documentation of the terrorist group and abundant digital material. ‘We continue our fight against all terrorist organisations with our police, gendarmerie and intelligence units, as part of our strategy to eradicate terrorism from the root,’ the minister said, congratulating the security forces on the success of the operation.
Turkey is one of the countries hardest hit by ISIS terrorism, including the 2017 New Year massacre that left 39 dead at Istanbul’s Reina Club, or the 10 October 2015 bombing outside Ankara’s central station that left 102 dead, considered the worst attack in Turkey’s history. Since the collapse in 2019 of the self-proclaimed ‘Islamic State caliphate’, many members of the organisation settled in Turkey: in 2024 alone at least 943 suspects were arrested in operations against Daesh in the Eurasian country.
