A metrobus caught fire early this morning in the Zeytinburnu district of central Istanbul, causing panic among passengers, who watched in amazement as smoke began to billow from the vehicle’s engine; although all passengers were eventually evacuated, this is a new incident affecting the metrobus network of the Turkish metropolis, one of the main means of public transport used every day by millions of Istanbulites to get to work.
Turkish media reported that the incident occurred this morning at around 6:45 local time (5:45 CET) near the Bayrampaşa-Maltepe metrobus stop, not far from Istanbul’s historic city walls. For reasons as yet unknown, smoke and flames suddenly started billowing from the engine compartment of a metrobus heading towards Edirnekapı.
When the passengers realised this, they panicked; however, thanks to the driver’s quick reaction, he immediately stopped the vehicle and opened the doors, and all the passengers were able to get out in time, thus avoiding a disaster. The metrobus suffered significant material damage due to the fire, but it was extinguished before it spread thanks to the rapid arrival of a fire brigade.
Although the fire was very serious, neither passengers nor anyone else was injured in the metrobus fire, but there were heavy traffic jams on the D-100 motorway in the direction of the Golden Horn (Istanbul’s historic centre), and the police had to temporarily divert traffic.
