fire on a motorway in Istanbul

Unbelievable: a burning, driverless vehicle on an Istanbul motorway

An unusual incident shocked today drivers on a motorway through Istanbul, who saw a vehicle completely engulfed in flames and without a driver driving on the road leaving a large column of smoke behind it, causing moments of panic in the middle of traffic which were caught on camera.

Several Turkish media outlets such as the daily Sabah reported the incident, which occurred this morning on the E-5 motorway that runs through western Istanbul as it passes through the European district of Esenyurt, specifically near the Sadetdere neighbourhood. For reasons as yet unknown, a van suddenly burst into flames while travelling on the motorway and the driver, noticing the smoke and flames coming from the rear, jumped out of the vehicle.

The van continued to drive – now without the driver – along the road as the fire consumed more and more of the vehicle, causing shock among drivers, who informed the emergency services as the incident caused serious disruption to traffic.

Several fire brigades were immediately sent to the scene of the incident and managed to extinguish the fire in a short time. The vehicle was completely destroyed, but fortunately no one was injured in this amazing incident, which caused temporary traffic congestion on the motorway and was recorded by the mobile phones of several drivers and residents of this area, located in the west of Istanbul.
