At least 114 people were killed and 150 others injured in a terrible tragedy in Iraq after a fire broke out during a Christian wedding in the town of Hamdaniyah, east of Mosul. Officials said the victims included many children, and that the bride and groom may have been killed in the accident. It is not excluded that the death toll could rise, as most of the injured have burns affecting 60 to 90 per cent of their bodies and their condition is critical.
According to initial investigations, the fire started when the wedding couple began to perform the traditional slow dance in front of all the guests; at that moment “they set off some fireworks, they hit the ceiling and it caught fire. Within seconds, the whole wedding hall was on fire,” one of the injured witnesses told Rudaw TV. A short video clip released to the media shows the couple starting to dance at the wedding, when the ceiling suddenly burst into flames and chaos ensued. Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has ordered an investigation and to provide all necessary assistance to the victims.
