Coinciding with the anniversary of her assassination, a religious ceremony was held in the southeastern Turkish province of Diyarbakır at the grave of eight-year-old Narin Güran, who disappeared on 21 August 2024 and was found dead 19 days later after an intense search that brought to light a horrific crime that still shocks Turkish society.
Turkish media reported that during the ceremony in memory of Narin, a Mevlid-i Şerif muslim prayer was recited at the grave of the little girl, where from early in the morning neighbours and friends came to pay their respects to the girl and pray for her soul, demanding justice for the terrible crime that happened a year ago. During the ceremony, as is customary, food was distributed to those present.
Narin’s father and an older brother, Arif Güran and Baran Güran, attended the ceremony and addressed the gathering: “Right now, my 80-year-old mother-in-law is the only one taking care of my children and my family. There is no one else“, said Arif. “A savage murdered my daughter, but a court buried my family alive,” added Narin’s father, who lamented that with the conviction of several of his family members for the crime (including his wife and Narin’s mother, and one of his sons), his family and his life have been broken. Arif, unable to accept what has happened, continues to believe that his family is innocent and that the only guilty party is the man who confessed to hiding the body of the girl, who was later found by autopsy to have been strangled to death.
Narin Güran, who was only 8 years old and lived in the small village of Tavşantepe in the Bağlar district, disappeared on 21 August 2024. His family reported her missing to the local gendarmerie, but investigators were suspicious from the outset: the delay in reporting her disappearance, deleted calls and messages from her family’s mobile phones, contradictory testimonies… When Narin’s body was found on 8 September hidden in a sack in the Eğertutmaz river, not far from the village, several of Narin’s relatives were arrested, including her uncle – brother of her father Arif – her mother – who was allegedly having a secret affair with her uncle – and her older brother, from whom police suspected from the beginning.
At the end of last December, the sentence for the murder of Narin Güran was announced, in which the court sentenced the girl’s mother (Yüksel Güran), older brother (Enes Güran) and uncle (Salim Güran) to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole – the maximum sentence allowed under Turkey’s civil code – on the charge of premeditated murder. Nevzat Bahtiyar, to whom Salim Güran allegedly gave Narin’s body on the day of the disappearance to hide it, and who later became the main collaborator in the investigation, was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison for destroying, concealing and tampering with evidence of the crime.
