The last flight from Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport landed at Istanbul airport after Turkey’s major airlines announced the suspension of all flights to Israel due to the serious security situation in the region, since last Saturday Hamas launched from Gaza the biggest offensive against Israel since the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
According to Turkish media reports, a large number of Israeli citizens, mainly women and families with children, were on board one of the latest flights from Israel. Indeed, there is currently a high demand from Israeli citizens who want to flee the conflict and are looking for connections to Turkey and Istanbul; however, in the last few hours both Turkish Airlines and Pegasus announced the suspension of all their flights “until further notice”. The last flight from Tel Aviv, TK787, landed in Istanbul yesterday at 21:00 local time.
Rebecca Satloff, an Israeli citizen who managed to catch one of the last flights from Israel, explained the difficult situation in her country: “We are trying to get to the US from here (Istanbul). We are going to Los Angeles with a connecting flight. It’s good to be in Turkey, and we are thankful for that. There are a lot of people at Tel Aviv airport. There are long queues, people are begging to get a flight. We have paid a lot of money to be able to take this flight,” he said. Among the passengers on the flight was also a group of Argentinian tourists, who after interrupting their tour in Israel have decided to spend a few days visiting Turkey.
