Mordi and Natalie Oknin, an Israeli couple arrested last week in Istanbul and accused of espionage, finally returned yesterday on a private plane to Israel, where they were received by their relatives, after Israel and Turkey negotiated their release. The couple had been accused of “political and military espionage” by an Istanbul court, after a restaurant employee reported to the police that they had been taking photos of Erdoğan’s residence in the city. Paradoxically, the incident has served to bring the two countries closer together: Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett telephoned Erdoğan to thank him for the efforts to free the couple… A contact at this level between the two countries, had not occurred since 2013.
