A new cat welcomes tourists visiting the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, which since 15 February is accessible through two separate entrances to reduce queues to the historic monument: one free entrance for worshippers coming to pray at the mosque, and another at a cost of €25 for tourists to the upper floor gallery, where the main Byzantine-era mosaics are located.
It is precisely in this upstairs area of the building that a new cat has begun to welcome tourists, reminiscent of the famous cat Gli, who until her death in 2020 was an icon of Hagia Sophia. Many of the visitors who stroll through this area of the monument even queue up to take photos and selfies with what seems to be the new mascot of Hagia Sophia.
