August 26 marked 949 years since the historic battle of Manzikert (Malazgirt), in which the Seljuk Turks under Alp Arslan defeated the army coming from Constantinople of the Byzantine Emperor Roman IV, who was taken prisoner, despite being in clear inferiority. The victory was so overwhelming that in a few years Byzantium lost almost all of Anatolia – its main source of grain, soldiers and taxes – being forced to ask for help to the Pope, who called the First Crusade.
