21 million tourists have visited the Grand Mosque of Hagia Sophia

21 million tourists have visited Hagia Sophia in Istanbul since its conversion into a mosque 3 years ago, on July 24, 2020. While in 2021, 1.3 million people visited Hagia Sophia, in 2022 – with the end of the pandemic and the arrival of more tourism – visits increased up to 13.6 million tourists; in the first 6 months of 2023, Hagia Sophia has received about 6 million visitors. Part of the success of visits is explained by the new opening hours to visit Hagia Sophia: unlike when it was a museum (when the opening hours were from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), with its reconversion, the now called Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque opens its doors early in the morning with the dawn prayer, and remains open until the evening prayer. Also, admission is now free.
