The Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis thanked Turkey for the help that the Turkish government has provided to the Greek authorities against the wildfires that have devastated many parts of the country, including the surroundings of Athens and the island of Rhodes. “Our gratitude to Turkey for sending two firefighting planes and a helicopter to help us in our fight against wildfires. Thank you Türkiye!” Mitsotakis said in a message posted on social media.
Firefighters continue fighting the flames, fanned by strong winds and out of control, on the island of Rhodes, located off the coast of Turkey and where some 30,000 people have had to be evacuated including many tourists, who had to leave their hotels and in many cases have been welcomed into their homes by local residents, in what has been described as the largest fire evacuation in Greek history.
