The entrance to the Great Mosque of Hagia Sophia has been endowed with new protection measures after the so-called “Imperial Gate“, a huge 1,400-year-old wooden door through which Byzantine emperors entered the ancient Orthodox basilica, suffered serious damage a year ago when someone tore off parts of its decoration, now restored again. To prevent a similar act of vandalism from occurring, glass panels have now been installed covering the door, as well as part of the walls at the entrance to Hagia Sophia, which were also damaged a year ago when several people tore off pieces to store them in plastic bags as “souvenirs”, forcing an increase in security guards in the area.
