Thousands of people took to the streets in Turkey’s major cities last night to protest in the wake of the brutal attack on a hospital in Gaza that left more than 500 people dead, with the Israel’s army and groups such as Hamas blaming each other for the massacre.
The main protest took place in Istanbul, where demonstrators gathered in front of the complex of buildings in the Levent district that houses the Israeli consulate, chanting slogans against Israeli intervention.
Turkish riot police later intervened when the crowd attempted to approach the consulate, in clashes between officers and protesters that left 5 arrested and 63 injured, 43 of them police officers. One of the participants in the protest also died of a heart attack, according to Turkish media reports. The area was heavily guarded and fenced off this morning, in anticipation of similar incidents.
Also in Ankara, thousands of people gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Turkey, amid heavy security measures, to protest against the bombing in Gaza, with police having to intervene to prevent some protesters from approaching the building. Similar protests took place in most cities in the country, including Izmir, Van, Edirne, Diyarbakır, Antalya, Malatya…
In Adana, one of the most important cities in southern Turkey, the protest in front of the US consulate against Israel and the Gaza hospital massacre turned violent when demonstrators started throwing stones and Molotov cocktails at the building, triggering a police intervention that left two people injured. Meanwhile, Israel has instructed its citizens to avoid travelling to Turkey, and has asked those in the country to return immediately as more incidents are expected because of the ongoing war in Gaza.
