Turkey has declared 3 days of official mourning following yesterday’s massacre in a Gaza hospital, in which 471 Palestinian civilians were killed according to the latest figures: a terrible event for which Hamas and several governments in the region accuse Israel, while the Israeli army maintains that the attack was caused by a rocket fired by Islamic Jihad that veered off course. “This shows that Turkey stands with the innocent in Palestine. This loss, whose pain we share, is also our loss,” Ömer Çelik, spokesman for Turkish President Erdoğan‘s AKP party, said from Ankara.
While condemnations of the tragedy by countries and international organisations continue, protests continue in many countries, including Turkey; here, the Turkish Jewish community issued a statement today denouncing the massacre of the Baptist hospital in Gaza: “We strongly condemn the targeting and killing of innocent civilians, especially in hospitals, schools, nursing homes or similar places, whatever the circumstances are… It is something that eliminates the right to life, which is the most basic right under international law, and which has no excuse and cannot be defended or accepted. We support the efforts of our country (Turkey) from day one to immediately restore calm and to achieve permanent peace,” the statement concluded.
