Turkey mourns the 12 soldiers killed in two attacks carried out between Friday and Saturday by the PKK terrorist group against Turkish army bases in northern Iraq, where Ankara maintains a strong military presence to prevent incursions into Turkish territory by the armed group.
In retaliation for the attacks, the Turkish Armed Forces launched heavy bombardments against PKK positions in northern Iraq and against targets of its affiliate in Syria, the YPG.
Turkey’s defence ministry confirmed late on Saturday that “29 targets, including caves, bunkers, shelters, oil facilities and warehouses, were hit and destroyed” in order to “eliminate terrorist attacks against Turkey and its security forces… and to ensure border security in line with the rights of self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter”. According to Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler, more than 2,150 members of the PKK terrorist group have been killed or captured during 2023.
