Turkish Armed Forces bombed up to 47 targets of the PKK terrorist group and its affiliate the YPG in airstrikes coordinated by Turkey’s intelligence services and carried out in northern Iraq and Syria, where the terrorist organisation has its main bases, following yesterday’s attack on the outskirts of Ankara that left five dead and 22 wounded at a Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) complex.
In a statement released late yesterday and quoted by Turkish media, the Defence Ministry reported that the Turkish Armed Forces (Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri or TSK in Turkish) had successfully bombed at least 32 PKK targets in the region, noting that the operation was carried out in accordance with the international right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter, with the aim of neutralising terrorist elements in the region, ending the threat of further terror attacks and ensuring border security.
‘During these operations, all necessary measures have been taken to ensure that innocent civilians, non-hostile targets, historical and cultural elements and the environment have not been damaged,’ the statement said, adding that a significant number of PKK terrorists were “neutralised” and that air operations in Syria and Iraq would continue in the coming hours. Subsequently, the number of targets bombed in the region was later increased to 47.
At least five people were killed and 22 others injured in yesterday afternoon’s terrorist attack on an industrial complex on the outskirts of Ankara that housed the headquarters of Turkey’s Aerospace Industries, which plays a key role in the country’s aviation and defence industry. So far no organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack, but Turkish authorities say all indications point to an action perpetrated by the PKK or one of its affiliates.
