Turkish army has in recent hours bombed at least 27 targets of the PKK terrorist group in northern Iraq, where the armed organisation has its main bases in the mountains bordering southeastern Turkey, Turkish Defence Ministry announced. The operation came in response to yesterday’s PKK attack on a Turkish military base in the region that killed one soldier and wounded four others.
Turkish army F-16 fighter jets bombed PKK positions in the Metina, Zap, Hakurk, Gara and Qandil regions of northern Iraq, the Turkish Defence Ministry said. “We have not left the blood of any of our martyrs on the ground,” the ministry added in a statement issued from Ankara.
During a visit to Iraq last week, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan managed to wrest from the Baghdad authorities a commitment to jointly fight the presence of the PKK – listed as a terrorist organisation by the EU and the US – on Iraqi territory, and the two countries signed a communiqué stressing that “the PKK terrorist group represents a threat to the security of both Turkey and Iraq” and its presence “represents a violation of the Iraqi constitution”. Recently, Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan vowed to end the PKK’s presence in Iraq and Syria ‘this summer’.
