A further 169 Turkish citizens have been evacuated in the last few hours from Lebanon – where Israel has resumed heavy bombardment of southern Lebanon and the capital Beirut – after almost a thousand people were evacuated by the Turkish navy on 10 October.
According to Turkish media reports, the 169 Turkish evacuees arrived on a specially deployed flight from Beirut to Çukurova airport in Mersin, southern Turkey, from where they were airlifted to Istanbul. It is not excluded that further evacuations may take place in the coming days.
On 10 October, a total of 966 people, including 878 Turkish nationals and 24 Turkish Cypriots, were evacuated together with their immediate families from Lebanon by sea in a convoy of six warships which left Mersin on 9 October, carrying on its outward journey to the port of Beirut some 300 tonnes of humanitarian aid for the people of Lebanon, including food, tents, blankets, beds and medical supplies.
In addition, Turkish Foreign Ministry sources quoted by the Turkish press indicated that Ankara has assisted in the evacuation from Lebanon of another 2,120 foreign nationals from a total of 21 countries, including the United States, Russia, Japan and Palestine, who were evacuated by air to Turkey and from there transferred to their destination countries.
