Free public transport for life for baby born on a bus

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has announced through his social networks that the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality will give free public transport for life to the baby who was born yesterday on board a bus, on which the mother gave birth without being able to wait to get to the hospital.

Baby Yılmaz, who was born on the metrobus, will benefit from free public transport for the rest of his life with the Istanbulkart. We wish the Mete family that their baby grows up healthy,’ İmamoğlu said in a message posted on his X profile, Turkish media reported.

The mother, Hanife Mete and who was in her 35th week of pregnancy, had boarded a metrobus to head to the hospital accompanied by her husband when she suddenly began to feel labour pains. After alerting the emergency services and evacuating passengers from the vehicle, the woman finally gave birth to the baby on the same bus with the help of her husband and medical staff.

Mother and child were subsequently taken by ambulance to a hospital and both are in good health. In the same social media post in which he announced that the baby will enjoy free public transport for the rest of his life, the mayor of Istanbul shared a photo of his wife, Dilek İmamoğlu, who visited the mother at the hospital centre.
