New images of Atatürk’s burial at the Anıtkabir Mausoleum in Ankara has come to light in Turkey. The newly revealed footage shows the funeral procession of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, hero of the Turkish War of Independence and first president of the Republic, during the transfer of his body to his current mausoleum on 10 November 1953, 15 years after his death, from the Ankara Ethnographic Museum where his remains had been temporarily laid to rest during the construction of Anıtkabir.
The images, originally in black and white but later coloured, have been found in an old archive, and in them in addition to the procession through the streets of Ankara appear the then Turkish President Celal Bayar delivering a speech at Anıtkabir, in which he says: “Now, we entrust you to the sacred soil sent from every corner of the homeland you saved“; these words refer to the containers with soil from the 81 provinces of Turkey, which are placed around the marble sarcophagus where Atatürk‘s remains rest in his mausoleum.
