Turkey became paralysed on Friday 10 November to remember and honour Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, hero of the Turkish War of Independence and considered the father of the nation, on the 85th anniversary of his death. Life stopped and Turks respectfully observed 2 minutes of silence at exactly 9:05 a.m., the same time Atatürk died on 10 November 1938 at the age of 57.
At that time, sirens throughout the country sounded and Turkish flags flew at half-mast, as people stood in silence and drivers stopped in the streets. At the Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul, thousands of people queued to pay their respects to Atatürk by visiting the very room where he died, 85 years ago.
