A ship loaded with humanitarian aid destined for Gaza left early Friday morning from the port of Alsancak in Izmir province – on Turkey‘s Aegean coast – for the Egyptian port of Al-Arish, located not far from the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, where it is due to arrive tomorrow, Saturday. Before, Turkey had already sent up to eight aircraft loaded with medicines and medical equipment in coordination with the Egyptian foreign ministry, as campaigns to boycott Israel grow in the country.
The ship is carrying a cargo of 500 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including medicines and hospital supplies, medical devices, 8 field hospitals and 20 ambulances, Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said yesterday, announcing that Ankara will begin procedures “as soon as possible” to transfer children with cancer to Turkey from Gaza so that they can continue to receive a vital treatment for their illness in the country. Koca, a doctor by profession, had a telephone conversation this week with his Israeli counterpart Uriel Menachem Buso, to whom he conveyed his firm rejection of the violence used against the Palestinian civilian population.
