Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reiterated on Thursday his harsh criticism of Israel and the West in the wake of the Israeli army’s offensive in Gaza, which has already killed nearly 11,000 people according to Palestinian sources, while calling on Muslims around the world to unite and raise their voices to stop the massacres of Palestinians in Gaza. “When will Muslims make their voices heard, if not now?” asked Erdoğan, who claimed that the world is facing a fanaticism that even “legitimises the killing of children“.
“73% of those mercilessly killed are women and children. (Israel) continues to bomb civilian residential areas,” insisted the Turkish leader, who recalled that world leaders raised their voices in 2015 after 25 people were killed in the attack on the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, but remain silent after the deaths of thousands of people in Gaza. “Western countries look at the massacre from afar. Those who look the other way at the burning of the Quran, cannot tolerate people waving Palestinian flags,” Erdoğan said, criticising the banning of anti-Israel protests in many European countries and cities.
