A foreign national who entered a shop in the city of Antalya, southern Turkey, and threw an image of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on the floor and trampled on it has been arrested by police following an incident that was recorded by security cameras.
As reported by Turkish media citing data from the Anatolia news agency, the governor of Antalya confirmed in a statement that the Antalya Police Department had launched an operation to apprehend the suspect after news of the ‘ugly attack on Atatürk’s image in Antalya’ appeared on 13 November.
The incident occurred when the arrested man, identified only by the initials A.A. and whose nationality is not known, entered a tyre repair shop in the Güzeloba neighbourhood of the Muratpaşa district on 12 November. After grabbing a picture of Atatürk from the door of the shop, he threw it on the floor, spat on it and trampled on it, at which point the shop assistant, a 20-year-old man named Mehmet Can, jumped on the man and ran after him as he fled the scene.
The incident was captured by security cameras at the venue, and the foreigner was arrested the same day and, after being interrogated, appeared before a court in Turkey on charges of violating Law 5816 for committing ‘crimes against Atatürk’.
